Self-defense and Jiu Jitsu

Updated: Nov 12, 2022

Many martial artists believe that martial arts and self-defense is the same thing. This includes those who practice jiu jitsu. It is not terribly wrong. Almost every jiu jitsu school teaches techniques that can be used in self-defense situations.

IS JIU JITSU USEFUL?

Are jiu jitsu techniques useful in a self defense-situation? Absolutely. Jiu jitsu may in fact be the most useful of all the martial arts for self-defense. This is because of the diversity of the techniques - offering everything from striking to throwing, grappling, pins and joint locks.

IS JIU JITSU ALL YOU NEED?

Are jiu jitsu techniques enough? Is jiu jitsu all you need to defend yourself? No, it is not. It may not even be the most important skill set. In addition to techniques you need a basic understanding on the following:

  • Awereness: How do you avoid getting in trouble? What are the warning signs?

  • Physical and mental limits. Are you capable of seriously hurting someone? If not, you will not be able to execute any techniques

  • The adrenaline drop (aka the chemical cocktail). Will you be able to move? Or will you freeze? (You will freeze). How do you brake the freeze?

  • The law. Do you know what constitutes justifiable self-defense? You must know where the line is drawn. If you cross the line, you risk defend yourself to imprisonment.

These and other topics on self-defense are covered in book «Self Defense by Jiu Jitsu». In short the book covers all the things regarding self-defense that you do not learn in the dojo. The book is primarily written for jiu jitsu instructors, those who train and practice jiu jitsu and anyone who engages in or is interested in martial arts and self-defense.
